June’s handicraft plan celebrates the warmth and wonder of early summer with easy, engaging nature crafts that use materials found in nature or around your home. Each craft includes step-by-step instructions and a material list, making it simple to follow and fun for kids of all ages.

1. 🍋 Citrus Garland Natural Air Freshener

A beautiful and functional craft that brings a summer-fresh scent into your home using dried citrus and herbs.

Materials needed:

  • Oranges, lemons, or limes
  • Fresh herbs (like rosemary or lavender)
  • Twine or string
  • Large needle or scissors
  • Baking sheet and parchment paper

1️⃣ Slice citrus thinly and lay on parchment-lined baking sheet.
2️⃣ Bake at 200°F for 2–3 hours, flipping halfway, until dried.
3️⃣ Let cool, then thread slices and herbs onto twine using a needle or tie with knots.
4️⃣ Hang in the kitchen, over a window, or on a porch for a fresh, natural scent.

2. 🌼 Wildflower Crowns

A lovely summer tradition that teaches weaving and plant ID. Great for nature walks!

Materials needed:

  • Long flexible stems or floral wire
  • Wildflowers (daisies, clover, lavender, etc.)
  • Floral tape or string

Instructions:

1️⃣ Form a circular base with stems or wire, fitting the child’s head.
2️⃣ Weave flowers through the base, using tape or string to secure thick stems.
3️⃣ Continue until the crown is full. Keep in the fridge for a few hours before wearing if needed.

3. 🐚 Nature Treasure Pouch

Sew a simple drawstring pouch for nature walks. Encourages exploration and care for little treasures.

  • Scrap fabric or old t-shirts
  • Needle and thread or fabric glue
  • String or ribbon for drawstring
  • Safety pin (if using string)

Instructions:

1️⃣ Cut a rectangle of fabric and fold in half.
2️⃣ Sew or glue the sides, leaving top open.
3️⃣ Fold over the top edge and stitch to make a drawstring casing.
4️⃣ Thread the string using a safety pin.
5️⃣ Use on nature walks to collect pebbles, leaves, or seeds.

4. 🐝 Bug Hotel

Teach kids how to care for God’s tiniest creatures with this hands-on craft that doubles as a backyard science project. Attracts pollinators and beneficial bugs!

  • Empty tin can or small wooden box
  • Bamboo sticks, twigs, pinecones, bark, rolled paper, straw
  • String or twine
  • Hot glue (optional)

Instructions:

1️⃣ Clean out a tin can and remove sharp edges if needed.
2️⃣ Stuff the inside tightly with natural materials like bamboo, bark, or pinecones.
3️⃣ Use glue if necessary to hold materials in place.
4️⃣ Tie string around the can and hang it horizontally in a shady spot in your garden.
5️⃣ Observe which bugs come to visit!
